UPPA researcher awarded TREMPLIN-ERC grant by French National Research Agency (ANR)

Susana C.M. Fernandes, currently concluding a Marie Curie Intra European Fellowship at KTH in Sweden, has just been awarded a TREMPLIN-ERC (T-ERC) by the French National Agency Research (ANR). The funding of almost €150k for a period of 18 months will allow Susana Fernandes to join the Polymer Research Team (EPCP) at IPREM UMR 5254 - Institut des Sciences Analytiques et de Physico-Chimie pour l’Environnement et les Matériaux – to develop her vision of mimicking the functionality of reef fish mucus to perform innovative biomaterials for tackling ultra-violet radiation-induced damages and diseases.

The research project to be carried out was inspired by the strategy

evolved by reef fishes to protect themselves from the damaging effects of ultra-violet radiation. The project aims at exploiting natural sunscreens and reproduces their natural occurrence linked to proteins or polysaccharides to create multifunctional biomaterials that are concomitant bio-inspired, bio-mimetic and bio-based and that combine cell protection, repair and regeneration properties.

The T-ERC grants, a new funding instrument set up by ANR on the occasion of its Work Program 2017, are designed to support French or foreign Young Researchers who are attached to a French public research organization and have reached the step 2 (interviews) of the evaluation process of the ERC-StG-2016 but did not get funding from the ERC. This funding is provided to improve their proposals in order to submit a new application (ERC-StG-2017), with better success rate. The main goal of the European Research Council (ERC) is to encourage high quality research in Europe through competitive funding supporting European leadership in world class research.
