Offer for a Thesis AllowanceSubject: Governing the subsurface within ecological transition : the mining indutry in French Guyana

Thesis subject

We are looking for a student with a Master degree in political science or sociology for a Ph.D grant.

The Ph.D research is included in a broader research project - about the politicization of the subsurface - developed in a junior chair, implemented in the project labelled i-Site ‘energy and environment solutions’ led by Pau University.

The Ph.D will be encompassed in a collective research about comparing various utilizations of the subsurface in a context of energy and ecological transitions. The research project should contribute to produce comparable data with two other projects led in the Junior Chair about the renewal of the French mining industry and energy storage. The research is framed within a constructivist approach of public problems and it aims at mapping narratives of actors and their strategies to defend or attack mining development in a context of ecological transition.

The Ph D. research will target the French Guyana, and more broadly the French overseas, to determine the modalities of governance and contestation of mining development.
While a large independence will be given to the candidate, the collective dimension of the research commits the candidate to map the discourses and actors in order to compare his/her research with the others led within the chair.
A six months fieldtrip is expected (travel expenses will be funded).
The collective dimension of the research also requires the location of the candidate in Pau. Participation to the research institute and the chair activities is expected. The Ph D grant comes along with a budget for research expenses.
