Context

The Energy and Environment Solutions initiative (E2S UPPA) invites candidates to apply for a tenure-track junior chair position on storage of hydrogen in deep saline aquifer, in partnership with the urban agglomeration of Pau (France), ProSim  and IFPEN .

The Université de Pau et des Pays de l’Adour (UPPA) is a leading research and teaching university, one of the top 20 in France, located in the beautiful, culturally rich and highly diverse area of the Atlantic Pyrenees. E2S UPPA is the completion of established collaborations between the main national research centers, i.e. the CNRS, BRGM, IFPEN, CEA, INRIA and INRAE, engaged in research in the core areas of Energy and Environment.

Research project

The main activity of the Junior Chair leader (equivalent to an Assistant Professor, tenure-track position) will be to build, develop and steer a research project on the storage of hydrogen in deep saline aquifers in line with UPPA and the institutional and industrial consortium requirements. The start-up package to support this junior chair consists of one PhD grant, two postdoctoral fellows and associated running costs. The chair will be co-funded by the consortium and E2S UPPA for 5 years.

The research project aims are:

  • to characterize the thermodynamic behavior of hydrogen (pure or mixed) in abiotic conditions(experimental and modeling). Biotic systems would be studied if the time allows.
  • to estimate its mobility within deep aquifers by molecular simulation to quantify the physical quantities associated with the quantities (solubilities) and the characteristic times of migration (mass diffusions) in the aqueous phase and in the presence of a permeability barrier.

In addition to the research project, the junior Chair holder is expected to ensure promotion of his/her research project during different scientific, industrial and public events. He/She is also expected to co-supervise one PhD candidate and two postdoctoral fellows and to communicate his/her research results at conferences and in journal publications.


Working conditions

Hosting Laboratory:
This Junior Chair will be hosted by the LaTEP (Laboratory of Thermal engineering, Energy and Processes) that is a research unit located in Pau (France).
The LaTEP addresses the issue of the energy transition by carrying out research in energy and processes for the environment. The scientific skills of the laboratory are based on experiments, modelling and simulation in the fields of thermodynamics of fluids and energy systems and intensification of processes.
The chair holder will have to conduct research in the « high pressure characterization of saline systems » team headed by Professor P. Cezac.

The research project will be developed in close collaboration with the LFCR (Laboratory of Complex Fluids and their Reservoirs, UMR 5150), another research unit based in Pau and headed by Professor G. Galliero.

Starting date: December 2020 - or as otherwise agreed

Length: tenure track position of a period of 5 years
The selected candidate must have a proven experience in scientific research and will be recruited for a period of 5 years with a status of teacher-researcher (i.e. Lecturer).

Salary: monthly salary (before taxes) in accordance with that of an assistant professor (national grid)
Teaching would be limited to 64 hrs per year (academic duty).

Targeted profile and requirements

The applicant must be proficient in spoken and written English and have good communication skills.

To be eligible for this UPPA employment, the candidate must hold a PhD degree in the field of chemical engineering.

Proven experience in research in fluid phase equilibria (experimental and/or modelling) would be an asset.

The PhD degree must have been obtained no more than five years prior to the application deadline. The 5-year period can be extended on circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in trade unions, etc. In the ranking of qualified applicants, particular importance will be given to scientific excellence. If the PhD has been obtained at the UPPA, two years mobility away from the E2S UPPA consortium must be demonstrated.

The ability to work as part of a team and a positive attitude towards mobility. As the Junior Chair holder leads the project, a personality with a certain scientific maturity, able to freely share his/herown new insights and willing to learn new techniques and methods would be a perfect match.
