Postdoctoral position in Thermal Energy Storage Systems

Context and aims

With the massive development of renewable energies, heating networks, Power to X systems, electric vehicles, etc., thermal energy storage is an ideal solution to promote the integration of these technologies and improve their energy efficiency.

The objective of this project is to design a platform (software package) of innovative and optimal thermal storage systems using solid-liquid phase change materials adapted to each industrial application.   This platform can be used as a tool to give concrete information and advice to initiate, implement or develop a thermal energy storage project in industry or in a local authority.  It can also be used as a pedagogical tool to teach thermal energy storage systems in Universities. The software package can be easily integrated into complex energy system modelling software such as: TRNsysy, DesignBuilder, Modelica,..


Tasks and proposed methodology

  • To improve and develop programs and tools for dimensioning energy systems using phase change materials (solid-liquid).
  • Conduct experiments on the characterization of phase change materials.
  • Develop methods for identifying parameters using genetic algorithms.
  • Optimization of thermal storage systems (sensible and latent).
  • Publication of research results (International Journals, conferences, etc.)


Work conditions

Location: Pau, France 

Starting period: starting late 03/5/2021   

Duration: 12 months

Employer: Université de Pau et des Pays de l'Adour

Monthly gross salary: 2960 €, including 64 hours of teaching/year (compulsory)
The salary of  the successful candidate will be based on  level chart  for  teaching and  research personnel  in  the  salary  system of  French universities.

Funding: This post doc position is funded by the project E2S UPPA (Energy Environment Solutions) whom core scientific domain focuses on Environment and Energy to meet challenges related to the energy transition, geo-resources, aquatic habitats and the environmental effects of natural and anthropogenic changes


Recruitment grade: young researcher (i.e. with PhD)

  • PhD. thesis degree in energy systems.
  • Experience in CFD and programming languages (Fortran, Python, Java, Ansys, Comsol, TRNsys) is highly desirable.
  • Expertise in thermal systems using phase change materials.
  • Experience in optimization and artificial intelligence algorithms.
  • Ability to analyze and write up data in the form of journal papers and reports.
